Taxi drivers from the VERANDA VS OLD SMIDDY INN
Toryglen Regional Football Centre

3 v 2 |

| VERANDA | OLD SMIDDY INN |
Both teams came prepared (well as best they could for a Sunday morning) for a good game of football to raise funds for the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund.First to score was captain fantastic Adam Leith for the Veranda with a well taken penalty. Both teams had chances in the first half but it was the Veranda that was to stretch their lead. From a well played ball down the wing and a perfect cross Charlie McKenzie fumbled the ball across the line in the dying minutes of the first half.
It was the Old Smiddy who came out the blocks first in the second half, with numerous chances it was only a matter of time before they scored. With a magnificent ball played through George Nelson for the Smiddy calmly slotted the ball past the helpless Veranda keeper,2-1 game on. Believing they could equalise the Smiddy threw everything at the Veranda a their determination paid off. Another well taken goal by George Nelson to even the score.
With minutes to go John Roland beat the offside trap and calmly placed the ball in the back of the net.
Veranda 3 v 2 Smiddy.
Amount Raised £240.00
Thank you to all the players.

2011 OUTING
It’s not every day you would see Noddy, Bart Simpson and the Wizard of Oz in Glasgow’s city centre, but then again anything is possible when it’s the 66th Annual Taxi Outing to Troon. From its origin in 1945, 66 years later in 2011, the vehicles may have changed but the format stays the same; take a child with additional educational needs to the seaside, for an ice cream and a fun-packed day.
From the first taxi that arrived in Kelvin Way in the West end of Glasgow- to the last taxi; each one decorated with objects and balloons. Some taxis were decorated with string and I have no doubt there were balloons attached to the string when they left the house in the morning. A fantastic spectacle to see and hear, and one of the day’s highlights for the children and parents was yet again the Glasgow Police pipe band, marching up and down Kelvin Way.
1000 red and yellow balloons sponsored by citizenM Hotel, were released to mark the start of the trip to Troon.
Between 100 and 150 taxis were on their way through the streets of Glasgow. Special thanks to Glasgow Strathclyde Police Bikers for their safe escort and the numerous policemen and women stopping the traffic at many sets of lights throughout the route to Troon. The Outing Fund would also like to thank the hundreds of people who came out and waved to the children as they passed along the route through Glasgow.
The weather in Troon wasn’t great, but as usual that did not stop the fantastic turnout and welcome once again from the people of Troon. Nursery and school children in fancy dress, teachers, mums, dads, grandparents all turned out to wave as the taxi’s entered Troon, you should all be very proud of your town. A fun-packed day was promised and with - pony riding, face painting, ski slope, bouncy castle, Radio Clyde Road Show, prizes for dancing and singing and of course not to forget Margaret’s sweets and ice cream -everyone had a fantastic day.
To finish off the day as we do every year we have the Taxi driver’s fancy dress parade. You can only admire the time and effort the drivers put in to their costumes, all the work certainly puts a smile on the children’s faces. Some drivers did go a bit too far. It has been reported that Batman and Robin along with Banana Man ganged up and set about Sponge Bob Square Pants. Not to worry it turns out they where only tickling him, you can tell by the smile on his face.
The Best Decorated Taxis. 1st Noddy 2nd Bart Simpson 3rd Wizard of Oz
The Best Dressed Drivers: 1st Sponge Bob Square Pants (Chic Donnelly) 2nd John Lennon (Jimmy Doogan) 3rd Cowboy (Scott Mc Kenzie)
The Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund would like to thank, everyone that gave up their time and effort to make the 66th Outing to Troon a fantastic day out for the children. A lot of work by a lot of people goes unnoticed but it’s equally important as the work you see. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL.
See you next year at the 67th Annual Glasgow Taxi Outing to Troon.
